WMS recognizing milestone events in Mennonite history

WMS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba—Winnipeg Mennonite School (WMS) will recognize milestone events in Mennonite history during the 2024-25 school year.

Mennonite Heritage Week started in 2020 and is “an opportunity to learn more about Mennonite Canadians, their unique history, their vibrant culture, and their contributions that have helped shape our country.” (GATINEAU, September 14, 2020) WMS is excited to recognize this week and share with our students and community more about the values that started our school.

The arrival of Mennonites in Manitoba dates back to 1874. To mark 150 years since that day, WMS is taking our grade 6-8 students to Mennonite Landing Site, located at the convergence of the Rat and Red Rivers. Our students will learn about Mennonite history and heritage, the lands' Indigenous and Métis roots, and then follow the path the first Mennonites took through southeast Manitoba.

WMS will also join groups worldwide to recognize the 500th anniversary of the symbolic beginnings of the Anabaptist movement. Mennonites and groups such as Amish and Hutterites are direct descendants of this movement.

WMS is committed to premier education and teaching the essential values of peacemaking, discipleship, and stewardship. These are core tenets of the Mennonite faith, and our school and community are committed to upholding them.

Out of respect for the Indigenous people of Manitoba, we the students, staff, and families of WMS recognize that our school is located in Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Ininew and Dakota peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis nation. We are learning about the Treaties that were made on this territory, and about the wrongs that were done to Indigenous people in the past, and that continue today. We are committed to be a community of reconciliation and peace.
