Alumni lead U18AAA Wild to a championship

WMS

Aidan Wuerfel and Cole Robertson celebrate their win with moms. (supplied)

Led by two WMEMS alumni, the Winnipeg Wild defeated the Winnipeg Bruins over Spring Break to win the U18AAA Hockey League Championship.

Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary & Middle School (WMEMS) graduates Aidan Wuerfel (2019) and Cole Robertson (2019) helped their team to victory, winning the best-of-five series 3-1. Both students attended WMEMS from Kindergarten until Grade 8 at our Bedson Campus.

At the start of the season, the Wild added both players to their leadership group, naming Robertson team captain and Wuerfel assistant captain. Both players responded, with Robertson leading the team in goals and Wuerfel leading the team in assists. That strong play continued in the playoffs, with both players contributing a point-per-game combined.

The Wild goaltender, Nicolas Rempel, also has a WMEMS connection; he is the son of Katherine Friesen's grade 5 teacher, Gina Wedel.

Congratulations to the Winnipeg Wild, and to our alumni, on their win.

Out of respect for the Indigenous people of Manitoba, we the students, staff, and families of WMS recognize that our school is located in Treaty One territory, on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Ininew and Dakota peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis nation. We are learning about the Treaties that were made on this territory, and about the wrongs that were done to Indigenous people in the past, and that continue today. We are committed to be a community of reconciliation and peace.
