WINNIPEG, Manitoba—Students from Winnipeg Mennonite School (WMS) spent Thursday and Friday following the trail of the first Mennonites in Manitoba and learning more about the heritage of their school.
Grade 6 to 8 students and staff from WMS Bedson and Katherine Friesen took a trip to southeast Manitoba last week to follow the Peace Trail. The Peace Trail, established in 2022, follows the path of the first Mennonites to settle in southeast Manitoba in 1874. There are ten stops on the trail, starting at Mennonite Landing near Niverville and ending at Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach.
Over four locations, students had the opportunity to learn about the areas and their importance to the Mennonite settlers and the Indigenous people before them. Students and teachers presented information at each location and heard from members of the Peace Trail Committee.
For many students, this was the first time they had spent meaningful time in southeast Manitoba. Presentations included information about the locations, Mennonite history, and the land. Peace Trail committee members Glen Klassen and Ernest Braun brought a unique history, sharing new information with the students and making the trip more rewarding.
Thank you to the teachers, committee members, and students for the research and presentations made on the trip.
WMS is committed to premier education and teaching the essential values of peacemaking, discipleship, and stewardship. These are core tenets of the Mennonite faith, and our school and community are committed to upholding them.
